Okay, so i've got quite a large emersed setup, however, Lately i noticed my plants arent doing that great, probably because of the temperature(they are in the basement). So instead of heating the entire room, i thought i'd make water flow through inert substrate(probably hydroballs, and thick grain sand for the carpetting plants)

Now, my emersed rack has 3 layers, so i figured using 3 large containers, covering them and using smaller, open containers to seperate the plants. I would pump the water from a 600 gallon rainbarrel with probably guppies and an autofeeder to the upper container, using bulkheads to make to flow down to the second and then to the third.

That way the heated water from my rainbarrel would keep the plants relatively warm.

Any idea's or pointing out the flaws to this little project would be very welcome!

Yup, You can heat the water instead. Being in the basement, light is you main barrier. You can do this cheaply by using the sun or buy expensive lighting fixtures.
I'm using just normal CFL bulbs, they are already installed, when the rack was upstairs(no other light in that room either) they did fine, so thats not really too much of a problem :p

My main concern is if aquarium plants will grow with this aquaponic style though

the main containers would be a closed transparent 35 inch long boxes. And planting rooted plants wouldnt really be a problem, but i'm not sure how i'm going to get the nutrient rich water flowing through the containers that are inside the big container with the tiny root carpet plants like dwarf hairgrass etc

If i just poke holes in the container, chances are i'm going to lose quite a bit of sand, or that the water is going to mainy pass next to the containers and i'll get relatively stagnant water inside those containers
