Embers

I've heard ember tetras prefer soft, low-pH water. I want to get some for my betta tank (he's solid black).

I know people say "fish can adapt to any parameters" but still. My pH always comes up as bright yellow on my master test kit (lowest possible) unless I add coral, which I might since the filter is a HOB. My KH is 2 and my GH is 8. Are those parameters good for embers?

i think youre ok. i never test my water, never acclimate the fishes. i just dump them into my tank. my ember tetra started playing with itself the first day. just dump it in and dont think about it too much. fishes will live. your water gotta be really messed up to dump them in and they die. even brackish water fishes i just dump them in. even when adding tap water without treating the water it's fine they wont die.

I'm not quite that cruel to my fish, but thanks for the tip...

My water is the opposite of yours - ph of 8.3, kh of 19 and I've got a school of about 20 in my 33. Point being, I don't think they're particularly finicky fish.
My tap water is rock hard with a high pH and my ember tetras keep trying to spawn! Lovely, tough little tetras.

Okay, thank you. I just heard that in high-ph hard water they'll be a lot paler. I see no reason to not get some though.
Embers are not very picky they should do fine no matter what really. Low hardness is good actually for Embers (although the gH is quite high compared to your kH but I digress) and pH doesn't matter all that much at the end of the day. But, overall it doesn't matter.
Don't dump your fish like WRX suggested as they can die from osmotic shock/temperature shock. I think you already said you weren't gonna follow it but just making sure hahaha.

Some of mine are a little pale, but most are very vibrantly colored. My neighbor has some as well and all of hers are intensely colored (same water obviously). I think my pale ones have more to do with the tank being fairly bright and not having as much in the way of plants as it probably should.

you're welcome
