You're going to have a very difficult time priming it if it's above water level. Usually you let gravity fill the canister with water and push all the air out. That won't be an option with your setup.

Will this system work above the tank? my 55g is built in the wall with front and back view dont have anywere to store sytem under tank. Im currently got two Maxi-Jet 600s under gravel system that I wanting to take out and getting ready to set tank up for plants.:confused1:

Negative on the above the tank.
I think it states in the manual that the filter must be placed below the tank. I could be wrong.
You are correct, the filter must be placed below the aquarium.
