Not a stupid question (or maybe we're both stupid)! I actually was doing a search last week when I was cleaning mine for the first time last week. I couldn't find any instructions either and finally just messed with them until they came off. Unfortunately, I had only closed one of the valves and siphoned 5 gallons of water onto my floor.
