Eheim 2217, Emperor 400, Eheim 2213

Well, im hoping to get rid of my emperor 400 and buying another eheim- either a 2213 or a 2215. Which would be the equivelant of an emperor 400? I have a 2217 running still. Tank is a 75g. i just dont like the noises from the emperor.. Also, does anyone have the measurements of how much eheim mech and substratpro you put in a 2217? there used to be a diagram online but i cant find it. would be awesome if someone had the measurements so i know how much to buy. thanks!

If you're buying a new eheim, the mech and substratpro should be included.
1L each is what I have in my 2217.

I'd put 2x 2217s on a 75gal tank, if that's what you're asking?
yea but i need the mech and substratpro for my current filter. I know that the new one will come with it, but i also have a 2217 which is what i need the stuff for =P
a 2nd 2217? gotta see if i can get a deal on one thats a lot of dough.. hell just the substrate is like 50$ a piece every few months lol
$50 every few months? Huh? You don't ever have to replace biomedia. Unless it starts falling apart after a decade or something.

The only media in an Eheim that should be replaced is the disposable floss, and the cheap way to go is to buy loose polyester fiber fill or quilt batting and use that instead of the Eheim brand pads. Or bonded pond filter media and cut it to size. That's what I do.

I'm a little unclear about what filter(s)? you have on the tank right now?

If you don't already have another filter on the tank, why not just run the Emperor 400 and the Eheim 2217 together?

I bought a two pack of media for the Eheim pre-filter intake. It's a little roundish mesh ball that fits right in there. Very nice! I took it out of the box and was examining it when my wife said, 'that's a potscrubber with a rubber band around it'. She was right! It's EXACTLY like the one next to our sink - but about 10x more expensive :)
hey you think a 2215 would be enough? its a 30-40$ Price difference..
A 2215 and your Emperor 400 together would be enough filtration. You might have to boost flow with a powerhead once the plants all grow in, though. Depends on your hardscape and planting scheme.

Really? i thought you had to replace the eheim mech and the substratpro every 3-6 months or whatever... so all you really have to do is replace the blue & White sponges every few months? o_0.
As for filters, I have a 2217 and the Emperor 400 running on it (took off the emperor for a bit because the two spraybars were getting clogged with gunk and only 6 out of 10 holes were spraying water at the stupid wheel thingies... so i just cleaned it out.. eheim 2217's still running). The emperor 400 and eheim 2217 were running together, but the emperor 400 is just so darn noisy, so i want to replace it. and every few minutes it makes wierd knocking noises and crap.. i was sure my tank was about to split at the seams and 75g of water would go flying all over lol.. i realized after taking out the filter its just the emperor thats making all of the wierd noises..

this is what im thinking of getting.. Ebay item # 330492869500... Its quite a bit cheaper than the 2217. Plus since im running two i could stick with only the eheim mech or something.. i dont really need the mechanical filtration as much as i do the biological (well, not right now as theres only 1 fish in there for now.. poor guy D=..) but i will when i get them fish you suggested- if i can find some lol. Anyhow, i have really fine stainless steel mesh intake cover thing from some guy in china who custom makes them... so literally all of the dirt is caught.. mostly small bits of plant and stuff.. so im gona get another one if i get a 2nd filter, so, again, mechanical filtration isnt really necessary besides for when once in a while i take off the intake covers to clean out all of the particles..

No, you don't ever replace the blue sponges either. Just the white floss ones. Or substitute them with cheaper bulk disposable media.

If you've already got one 2217 then a 2nd 2217 or even just a 2215 is probably fine.

I'd go with the 2217 just b/c IMO the price difference is worth the extra filtration and flow. Plus then you only have to worry about stocking one size filter media, spare parts, etc...
true.. might just save up and just buy a 2nd 2217 in 1 or 2 weeks, then.. theres only 1 fish in the tank for now so the 2217 can easily handle the tank.. ill just make sure i get a 2nd filter in there before i add fish =P. Hey do you think i should order and keep a few spare parts on hand? impellers and stuff?
Yes. Just replace the white filter pads. I cut my own. Rinse the blue pads and mechanical substrate with tank water. Chlorine will kill your bacteria. I do mine at the same time I so a water change so I can fill my bucket a few times with tank water to rinse the filter pad/media. It will take a few buckets to get everything clean.

I would do another 2217 too. I have a 2215 and an AC110 HOB on my 72 and there isn't enough flow. The flow in the Eheims seems very low. I will know how low tomorrow. Going to calculate flow rate before/after I install my DIY reactor. The reactor will likely reduce flow to some degree and I already don't like my flow. After I see how bad it is, I need to decide on 1 or 2 Nano powerheads, or replace my HOB with a larger canister and long spray bar. Not really looking forward to either option.

yea im talking to some guy thats selling a few 2217's.. i didnt know that you dont need to replace everything.. so just selling my emperor will cover maybe 4/10 the cost of a 2217.. gona post the emperor on ebay. lol
I only replace the ceramic prefilter media when it becomes brittle, but I always just rinse it. The blue pad I use a hose to rinse it. Then I get some universal course and fine pads to do the rest of the filtration. I spend maybe 10 bucks every 2 months for the supplies on my 2217 in my 55 gallon.

If you think the flow on the eheim is low, get their jet nozzle, it makes up for it.
gotcha =D. Anyhow, im about to post my emperor on ebay but realized that i have two bottles of activated carbon that are literally brand new. I used only enough to fill up the two plastic net things that come with the emperor to add extra carbon- so literally like an ounce lol. I dont think ill ever really need it with my filtration being a 2217, soon to be 2?? i cant think of any reason as to why id need it but its a shame to sell it and get little for it when i just bought it a week or two ago for almost 30$ for the two bottles. One is the petco brand plain old carbon and the other is the fancy Marineland Diamond Blend Carbon.. 900ml of that and then i got 28 oz of the petco brand stuff.. Any idea as to if i will ever need it? should i keep it for some wierd reason? or just sell it with the filter and get rid of it? o_0

I'd keep the carbon. You might use it some day to clean up some tannins or meds or something.
hmm. How would i use the carbon to clean those stuff out though.. lol? put it in my eheims? or is there some sort of machine or something you use? I might just keep the diamond blend since i paid so much for it. like 10-15$ or something lol
Yes, you'd put it inside a media bag in one of your filters.
