Ok, they aren't inverts but I decided to put this here anyway since they aren't fish or plants either ......... anyway, has anyone heard of the CDC potentially banning dwarf frogs because of salmonella? I went searching for a new one and one LFS said that they may not be getting any more in because of the upcoming ban.

I heard of rumors. But that's all it is ... rumor.

If they ban ADFs then they are going to have to ban reptiles like Iguana's and such.

My LFS hasn't had any in a while and the tank they normally keep them in, the sign with the prices is gone from the front of the tank as well, so maybe they won't be having them anymore, not sure. I have 2 of the little things. They are so neat to watch. They have their own tank now and everything.

They're such neat little creatures too, I wish the pet stores would tell people their needs though. I imagine 75% of them sold, end up in a huge tall tank that the frogs have a hard time surfacing for air, and they aren't spot fed or kept in a tank where people think they will just eat what they find. They are nearly blind and they need to be hand fed for the most part. You can train them to goto the same spot for food though. I have mine in a 2.5gal tank, so easy to surface for air, have a little cave to hang out in, and I use an upside down lid to put their food in and they can find in easily in a small tank and know that is the feeding dish. When the males make their mating call, its neat too.

I just picked up three of these two weeks ago. I also had a hard time finding them, had to go to 3 different big box stores. The first one I didn't see a sign so i asked the kid working there. He tried to sell me a fire bellied toad. Said it was an aquatic frog. I wish the people they had working in those departments were actually trained on what they sold, but that's another thread. I found mine at Petco because all the Petsmarts I went to no longer carry them. I had to ask the guy there about them too, since they didn't have a sign up eiher. They still had a dozen or so, and he said he was going to keep ordering them cause they sold well. Hopefully it's the same in your area. Good luck!

They may be seasonal. They won't be banned any time soon. They aren't handled like a reptile would be.

No, dwarf frogs are a small fully aquatic frog that live their whole lives underwater. They don't need land and will die if they are out of water too long. They swim to the surface, take a breath of air and can stay under for hours with that one breath. They eat underwater, have no tongues like other frogs.

Well if this is the case, I may be able to supply the market with ADFs, lol. Mine breed every spring and I usually only allow a couple of them to survive as I don't have the tank space for more than my adults and a couple each year to replace what I lost or give to friends. There was really never much interest in my club for them. Maybe next year I should allow more of them to make it. I will have to keep up with the news on them. They are not too difficult to raise as long as you have microworms and grindal worms.

Yeah mine bred pretty well too - I kinda miss them! I like the vibrating hums that the males make, so cute!

I have them in a 15 gal tank that sits right next to my computer. When I hear the humming that Alyssa was writing about, I watch for the males to clasp the females. The next day I check the top of the water to see if there are any eggs floating on it. If there are I use a brine shrimp net to net out a bunch of eggs and put them in a bucket with tank water. The eggs are very sticky so I just put the entire net in the bucket and leave it there. After 3 to 4 days the eggs hatch and I remove the net. A couple more days and I start feeding them microworms or vinegar eels. They will only eat live food and unfortunately they don't grow at the same rate so some of the bigger ones will end up eating some of the smaller ones. Later on they will eat grindal worms and once they are about half way through morphing into frogs I start them out on cut up frozen blood worms. For about 2 months after they morph I still keep them in a tank with a sponge filter as they are weak swimmers at first and have a hard time staying clear of the filter intakes.

I must have two males then...mine have been happily living in my 20G half-moon (no worries - they make it to the top with ease). I hear the humming form time to time - quite loud...but never any mating!

Looks like I should be more careful with the water and washing my hands

havent heard that. if you want to get on the ground flood of under ground dwarf frogs ill get you a few hundred lol
