I didn't have a problem with either submerged or emersed HC. But I live in a pretty humid area and the temps range from 75F-85F. I think it'll be fine as long as the tank has high humidity and a consistent temps. I also used the sprinkle method of planting. Just moisten the substrate, sprinkle on some HC cuttings, lightly push them into the substrate with your finger, and let them root. Every two weeks I would trim the HC and spread the cuttings to areas that weren't covered yet.

I did this on 2 of my tanks. One with Flourite Dark and the other with Aqua Soil.

Good luck!

did you have any mold or fungus problems?
I didn't have mold or fungus but sometimes I sprayed a little too much water and got algae where the substrate meets the glass. Every week I siphoned out the water, to keep the water below the substrate.
I'm on my 6th week of DSM right now. Take a look in my journal for pitfalls.

My HC has a hard time transitioning for sub - emerse. if I ever did it again I would have just filled since the HC was already sub.

I do like the idea of cutting the trimming and spreading them in bare areas. - Something I never did.
