I bought some Malaysian driftwood the other day and boiled it for about an hour to get some of the tannins out. After taking it out I noticed that some parts of the wood were soft and could be scraped off with a screwdriver. Without the poking and scraping, the wood stays intact.

Is this due to rot? Will it be safe in my tank or will it just break apart soon? I'd like to know so I can consider getting my money back. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Your wood shouldn't be mushy. If it's just a small section of wood, just scrape it until you hit 'solid' wood again. If the whole thing is mush, it's garbage.

I never boiled the Malaysian wood that i purchased from my LFS. Just scrubbed it and threw it in the tank. No tannins were leached. I don't think boiling is really necessarey on this type of wood.

some parts are soft, but i just leave it seems natural for wood peices to drop
