ok gonna give it a try and i read the sticky about dosing. Now are these the only ferts that i will need according to the sticky.

Tank's (2)
40~60gal
50%H20 change-weekly
+/-1/2Tsp KN03 3x a week
+/-1/8Tsp KH2P04 3x a week
+/-1/8Tsp K2S04 3x a week
+/-10ml Trace 3x a week
+/-2-4ml Fe/Iron 3x a week

Tank is a 55g that is med planted and wanting to become heavily platned with injected co2 and 2wpg lighting. thanks for any advice starting out with dry fert dosing.

Should be.....

KN03
KH2P04
K2s04
Csm+b

but the K2S04 is optional since you are dosing K with the N and the P
Some say it is optional, but I would not completely over look it, the 'S' is also a much needed nutrient that is rarely recognized, and needed by the plants in at least mIcro form, if one is only using CSM+B as a trace element, then adding K2S04 is an additional plus. CSM+B has zero 'S', where as Flourish and Tropica does contain some.
I personally have seen positive results from dosing K2S04 at least once a week.
Each individual must work out their own salvation for the tank they maintain. :)

It is cheap, easy to dose and certainly does not hurt.

KN03
KH2P04
K2S04
CSM+B

Somewhere along the way in your planted tank en devours I would also purchase Flourish Comprehensive and some Tropica plant nutrition to dose as trace minerals on occasion.

I use CSM+B most of the time, but I do also use the other trace elements available at various times, usually once a week, one or the other, then use CSM+B for the rest of the week.

With only 2WPG you would not need to dose all that 3x a week, that would be a bit to much, unless you increase your light.
This is where the +/- comes in.

+/-1/4Tsp KN03 3x a week
+/-1/16Tsp KH2P04 3x a week
+/-1/16Tsp K2S04 3x a week
+/-7ml Trace 3x a week
+/-1-2ml Fe/Iron 3x a week- again, with only 2WPG you can get by without this, there is enough in the trace mineral, unless you pump up the light.

or

+/-1/2Tsp KN03 2x a week
+/-1/8Tsp KH2P04 2x a week
+/-1/8Tsp K2S04 2x a week
+/-10ml Trace 2x a week
+/-2-4ml Fe/Iron 2x a week

does anyone use npk? If you do what else do you need to use?
??????

OK, unless there is a brand I don't know about, NPK stands for Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potassium (respectively), which is found in KNO3, KH2P04, K2S04 (respectively). Those are the Macro Nutrients, after that you also need Carbon (CO2, or Flourish Excel), and MicroNutrients (CSM+B, Tropica plant nutrition) .

He's probably talking about the Seachem Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium macros.

If you use NPK you would also need trace and iron, though trace alone might have enough iron in it.

This has been discussed before, but you can mix the macros together but don't combine the micros with that solution. Something about phosphate precipitating iron chelates and some such. Just keep phosphate and iron separate. Would be best to use some distilled water for the dilution as your tap might contain phosphates also ...

Many thanks, for a 30G how long would 250 grams of each would last for?
Many people buy it by the pound or 454 grams. It's lasts a long time. 250 grams will last a long time as well. I did some ball park calculations below to get an idea about how long 250 grams will last. But, please double check my math. It should be close though.

I used chuck's calculator to get the weights of the dry ferts: http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_plant_dosage_calc.htm

You have a 30g tank. I used Tom Barr's EI dosing for a 20g to 40g tank from this article: http://www.barrreport.com/articles/1800-ei-light-less-techical-aspects-estimative-index.html

20-40 Gallon Aquariums

+/- 1/4 tsp (1.4 gm) KN03 3x a week = 4.2 gm per week, then 250 gm /4.2 gm per week = ~ 60 weeks or ~ 1.2 years

+/- 1/16 tsp (0.3 gm) KH2P04 3x a week = 0.9 gm per week, then 250 gm /0.9 gm per week = ~ 278 weeks or ~ 5.3 years

+/- 1/16 tsp K2S04 (0.38 gm) 3x a week = 1.14 gm per week, then 250 gm /1.14 gm per week = ~ 219 weeks or ~ 4.2 years

+/- 1/16 tsp (5ml) Trace Elements 3x a week {I didn't figure the trace}

50% weekly water change

You can see that 250 grams of the ferts can last from ~ 1 year to ~ 5 years but that still depends on what you actually use. This is just one example of a dosing schedule.

Many thanks guys :) seems like the way to go, I have been buying Kent Botanica products but they seem expensive to me and this way is more economical.

Sorry for being a pain, but I am new to this powder fertilization, could you please explain from the aquaessentials web site ( http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=145_146 ) what is what, with matching the codes KN03 etc... to the right products.

Also I just purchased a new light unit with 4x24w T5 is this enough or should I also use my existing 2x24w T5 aswell?

Many thanks for all the help :)

You're welcome!

Is this what you are asking:
Potassium Nitrate KNO3
Mono Potassium Phosphate KH2PO4
Potassium Sulfate K2SO4

Thanks again for your help, and the trace elements and Fe? would I buy that in liquid form?
You're welcome.

This will have to be your choice here. I'll tell you a little though.

I haven't read anything about any people using their powder Trace mix. I see it contains a lot of Iron (Fe) but only a few trace elements: http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=145_146&products_id=545

Many people really like TPN (it used to be TMG): http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=208&products_id=1035

Many people like Seachem's Flourish (comp.): http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=208&products_id=299

The ADA products are good but they are pricey: http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=208&sort=20a&page=1

I'm not familiar with any of the others.

Thanks for all the help much appreciated, just to clarify things I would use the 3 powders as recomended plus for example the TPN and that would be enough. I would then have to adjust the dose acordingly.

Also any recomendations on the lighting as mentioned earlier?
Would 4x24w T5 be enough for a 80cm wide, 50cm deep 30g? or it would be better to add the extra 2x24w T5 making it a total of 6x24w T5?

I would like to plant glosso to cover my gravel.

Thanks for all the help :)

You're welcome.

You have a starting dose to go by when I did the "is 250 grams enough" calculation. Some people also add additional iron from time to time. I use Seachem's F. Iron.

I haven't used T5's or grown glosso before. So, any answer that I would give would only be a guess. It would be better if someone with that experience would help you with this question.
