Hey all,
Doing a fairly large open paludarium installation with a 42” tall back glass wall. We are tiling this wall in moss and plants similar to some of the DOOA brand paludarium tanks. I have ordered a pack of their wabi-kusa mats to get a feel for material, but am wondering if anyone knows what this material is, or has found a great alternative? They are gouging quite a bit at 20$ for 5 small tiles and with this size of a project it is worth our while to hunt down a better source. I was thinking is was high density Matala pond filtration but it’s certainly much thinner at about 5/8”.

When Fosters & Smith were still in business I bought black filter mats from them that looked very similar to this, except they were an inch thick. Have you considered scrubber pads/utility pads? You can get quite a lot of them for cheap and they have the same consistency.
