Notice the nasty looking algae that is almost slime like on the driftwood...What is it? How do I get rid of it? Never had it before, it just popped up during my period of neglect...

Its Blue Green Algae(BGA). Theres alot of ways to rid of this, whats your nitrates at? I have herd increasing nitrates will rid this. There also anibacterial medications that can be used. Technically its not an "algae", its considered bacteria. Not 100% on this but Im sure others will correct me if Im wrong.

the algae kinda looks like the start of BBA(black brush algae)
what fish are in there?
SAE's will eat this sometimes.

I agree, the background takes alot of focus away from the plants.

The longer you stay here, the more you'll want too start doing amano style scapes and suff. It's like a slow cancer, growing on you.

Ordered a Coralife 4x65 watt yesterday, can't wait to get it...(I have already added it in my sig...lol). I took the bga infected driftwood out and rinsed it with hot water then baked it for a good 30-40 min....hopefully that will end the bga prob (It was only on that one piece of wood). With the negative comments on the blue background Im gonna scrape it off and change it to black...It's time for a change anyway, it's been like that for about 3 years now. I also have ordered some plants from Aquabotanic last week but I still haven't heard anything....hopefully they will come soon...I will post new pics of the tank once i get the background changed. My fiance isn't to happy with me, In the last 2 or 3 months I have bought the coralife light, Filstar xp2, and a Rex Grigg Co2 regulator...Oh well, she will get over it...lol.

nice looking tank there. is it just me or are the colors a little funny?
I was thinking the same thing. I think its the blue background clashing with the green and reddish of the plants. Just a personal preference, but I would ditch the blue background and inert gravel.

The substrate is 95 percent shultz, 4 percent sand and 1 percent gravel. The blue background is 2 different shades of blue and i plan on changing it tonite or tomorrow....probably just paint it black after I scrape off the blue.

Just got my plants from Aquabotanic yesterday and got em planted...I also used peroxide on the bga and it killed it, hopefully it's gone for good. I will post more pics later today after the lights come on. Oh and thanks ppl for suggesting the background color change, I had never thought about it drawing attention from the plants...I like the black better but my wife hates it...She said the blue was prettier...Oh well...
