I can only tell you my experience.... I change the water 2 times a week (25%) in all of my shrimp tanks. All of the species breed very well for me and I do not think that there are any negative effects of doing a water change. However, you can definitely cause problems with doing a water change if you do not do it properly... i.e. trying to mix hot and cold to match tank temp...not using dechlorinator...etc.
Wood, what do you recommend then to equalize temp for new water?
or you can be lazy like me and never do water changes. I only top off my water once its low and ive been fine with crs, rcs, n amanos.

Depends on how many shrimp you are sucking up with your WC hose!!!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

My instincts tell me that, like any other aquatic species, shrimp would appreciate and breed more in water of better quality. But, I've got nothing to back that up with!

Which dechlorinator are you using?
prime prime prime. (sorry needed 10 charecters)

But most people use prime and alot swear by it.
Seachem Prime is THE BEST that I have used. I am one of those that swears by it :)

Kenshin wrote an article on changing water in the winter, which is also a good way to learn how to equalize the temps..

There could be many factors here.

Could be that your water is not prepared correctly before water changes. Do you use prime? Do you declorinate your water in any way? What are the water parameters of you aquarium and of your tap water?

What do you keep the temperature of your tank? Did the tank get warmer while you were away for your summer trip? Warmer water causes the shrimp to breed faster (with in reason of course)

How do you change water? Do you use a large siphon? You may be sucking up babies and not know it!

Like I said, a lot of things can be going on here!
Another possibility is the buffering capacity of your water. Changing too much after a long hiatus from water changes can cause big shifts in your water capacity. Not sure about cherries, but I know some fish/invertebrates can be sensitive to this.

Oh, and I love PRIME, too! ;)
nothing important to say here, just checking the consensus.

my wife hates when i do water changes, she says the prime smells like rotten eggs (me too) but it is a wonderful product!

Yea its the sulfur. It is a wonderful product indeed. Ever since I switched to it a long time ago I must say that the change was very good as far as shrimp health. All of the other dechlorinators that I used did not seem to make the shrimps happy for some reason...
