So after a few years out of the hobby, I'm getting ready to jump back in. After doing a lot of reading, I decided to try using black flourite sand as a substrate. Previously, I had used plain gravel and have just realized that my plants had not reached their full potential.

I'm in the process of setting up a 29g tank. My question is: do I need to cap the sand with a fine gravel? Thanks for your input!

You do not need to cap sand. You can if you want but its not essential.

I would not. Many use sand alone in fish only tanks for the clean look. Also depending on how much stirring there is in your tank, the sand and cap will often wind up mixed anyway.

Sometimes people use sand as a cap, it definitely doesn't need capping.
