Does nano tank need water circulation?

It's always good to have even just a minimal circulation, it helps with nutrient transport and helps with surface film.

agreed, a tiny sponge filter or even a nano powerhead would be perfect, just for water movement.

I think it can be successful either way. The question is, does it need constant circulation? I would say no. Those little tanks evaporate pretty quickly so if your adding some water every other day and it's moving ferts and whatnot around your probably fine for many plants. I've run plenty of small nanos without a problem for well over a year. Probably a combination of lifestyle and what will work best for you in terms of filtration. If you don't mind a filter on a small nano then your probably better off using one.

9 months with no filter and minimal water changes in the beginning. Just topping off now.

Yes, agreed. And in addition it helps to prevent the development
of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), and provides a certain amount of distributed oxygenation throughout the tank.
