I have a black/brown colored sludgy stuff that covers just the plant leaves. It's slimey, can be scratched off in small sheets, it's thicker than the leaves themselves, grows faster than the plants.

Algae articles seem to describe BGA, but I don't have the right color...

Does having black BGA sound normal? Or might it be something else?

Yes, it comes in a number of different colors...

"Do not let the name confuse you. They are not necessarily blue-green but can be blackish, greenish, blue greenish, yellowish, brownish and reddish. The latter color is perhaps the one most saltwater hobbyists are familiar with."
