Title pretty much says it: I want the aeration, but think I'd prefer to avoid MTS if possible. I keep hearing about them over-reproducing, and they are apparently banned in Wisconsin. Might still be the best option, but I'm curious about alternatives. Surely they aren't the only burrowing snails...

Open to on snail suggestions also.

KUHil loaches. Fire Eel tire track eel all will burrow in substrate.

Assassin Snails and especially their babies do occasionally burrow into the substrate. You can try a few of those.
