Only thing I used was one of the extendable breakoff style carpet knives with a fresh long blade. Very flexible and easy to slice the silicone inside and out. Then I broke away each side of the lip, one at a time. The most tedious part is removing the leftover silicone with wd40 and a razor blade.

shrimps, ottos and snails

That's the mix im headed towards myself. I just have to find a new home for my catfish...
Being able to see new spawns and an ever changing community just seems cool. IMO, there are "neat" freshwater fish but the brilliance of shrimp is too much to not try. I just wont "get rid" of my Raphael cat. He has survived too much. Having more than one tank is inevitable. I have 4 already but 3 house turtles.
