As a substrate which would be more beneficial to plants, if either, i know many people use pool filter sand but never heard of anyone using diatomaceous earth as a substrate. any thoughts??

DE is extremely fine, almost dust-like and I would imagine that it will not make a good substrate. Any sort of current will kick it up.

i was unsure weather or not diatomaceous earth had any benefits to a planted tank, as a substrate, thats why i had asked. i had read online that it was used as a plant soil because of its ability to hold nutrients, i thought maybe this would work in a similar way in an aquarium?? i am just thinking out of the box, you never know what you might come up with :).

i do agree though about its dust like properties i did not think of that initially, it would be difficult to keep it from floating all over the place in a tank, so maybe it is a bad idea after all.
