I know it's not ideal but can dwarf hair grass do well in a gravel substrate or does it require a dirt substrate to survive?

My roommate just put some in his Turface substrate. It's been in there for a week or so and it's already sending out runners, which is pretty neat.
He uprooted one today to move it and it's got a really nice root structure going as well.
