Depth of substrate?

+2 I've wondered the same. Does this rule apply to heavily planted too? :confused1:

I think even if you go to 10 cm or so, there shouldn't be any problems, especially in a planted aquarium. The roots of the plants should aerate the substrate, and thus, deep gravel vacuuming is not required.

I plan to leave some areas clear of plants (and therefore plant roots) . What is the greatest depth to which I can layer gravel in this area before it becomes anaerobic?

If your using plain aquarium gravel it's probably not ever going to go anaerobic, that usually only happens with very small particle substrates like sand that can compact and cause it to go anaerobic.
