Deadacation: A 120 Gallon build from the heart.

I've been on a planting kick ever since I watched my brother take his last breath during the end of his long battle with lung cancer in April. He left behind a wife and 3 kids that I love very much. I had a 125 Gallon reef tank for a while but left that behind when we got married and moved out of the ATL and into the northern sticks. Since it's too cold to play out in the yard anymore I figured I'd finally build that planted tank I've always wanted and dedicate it to his son who is going on a climbing trip in south america. I've been doing the fish thing (both fresh and reef) for upwards of forty years now and have had an established lightly planted 29 for many years now but this one is special.

Here goes...

My ideas normally start on napkins but this time I stepped it up to paper.

I call it Beefcake Jr.
I overbuild cars on the side so this was no different and I like the sound of 2X6.

Surprisingly, my wife and dogs were not as thrilled as I was about my new impact driver.

I had this nutty idea to have a tower fan blowing on some shiny fabric that has LED RGB controllable lights shining on it to help create a shimmer effect from hell while viewed through the frosted privacy film adhered to the back glass.

The test proved to be cooler than expected.

Built a strong shelf base to aid in the light actuators and false wall installation.

A thick plywood top was applied and to my surprise, my wife's aqua blue yoga mat was a perfect fit and required no trimming. again, my wife was not as thrilled about this as I for some reason. I mocked up some cardboard and fabric to see what the canopy will be like. I'm going with the in wall open right side look with a removable panel of sorts and a maintenance platform that rolls out of the stand that I can safely stand on.

The journal started off so sad!!! sorry for your loss, on a brighter note your tank and build so far is definitely coming along! the stand for the tank looks like it has way more support than needed but who said that's a bad thing? the more the merrier! cant wait to see it when its all planted and ready-to-go. Good luck on your aquarium building journey my friend :)

The Platform from hell

OK, now I need to get up there

Version 1.0 was a bit too narrow so I had to go with version 2...

It's Dorkzilla! Run!!

It also serves as the best seat in the house, I'm using it as my desk typing this right now.

Tucked in special.

I took my buddy Leonard to the streams of the north GA mountains on a rock hunting expedition.

We've been getting a bunch of stuff coming in for the past couple months and now we are in the tail end of the plant gathering phase.

The 29 is chock full of stuff (Thanks MOT!).

Baitee is loving her new mattress, far better than suck-hanging on the pre-filter sponge.

I had some pagoda rock on hand and was playing around and then it happened, I jumped the temple shark.

Took me a while to get to where I didn't hate it and now I'm digging it. I'll add some more spider wood on the rt side and moss the trees in due time but other than that it's party time!

nice start and great height for the new tank. I do however think a frosted background would have been ideal for this setup Just my opinion.

I installed frosted privacy film on the back & side glass.

Planted as much as my back could handle last night and started the flood around 12am, this was what it looked like a 5am.

After Flood Day 3:

Normal culture melt, nothing to see here right?

Pre-bottom leaf snip pic.

I need more plants. I chickened out on transferring Lacy over... at least until it's stable.

Everything seems stable at this point as far as I can tell. C02 is steady at 25ppm during the 7 hour photo period and a 7-6 PH swing is a daily occurrence. Something brought the green out of the jade shrimp since it was never that stunning. The Danio's are much brighter as well.

Made some progress but ran out of the maple panels my buddy snagged from his Dad's wood pile a while back.
