De-rimming full 5 gallon+other questions

1387 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Robotponys
So I want to de-rim my 5 gallon, but I just re-did the whole thing 3 or so weeks ago. I don't really want to tear it down again. Is it possible to de-rim with flora and fauna? If it is possible without killing my tank, can I just slide a exacto blade under take off the rim, and scrape? Do I need to sand it?

1 female endler, 2 otos, 2 Amanos, snails, and plants. Sand substrate. Aqua tech 5-15 gallon filter.

Other questions:
Can anyone suggest ferts to get rid of a serious algae problem? Direct sunlight at least 3 hrs, many more of indirect sunlight. Also a small LED lamp is on when I notice it is darker (cloudy, early morning, etc). Thanks!

Can someone ID this plant? Will it grow tied to rock?

And this one. Will it grow emersed? Thanks!

The second plant is Windelov java fern. It should be able to grow emersed.
Thanks!

I personally wouldn't de-rim a tank that's set up. The rim may not come off in one piece, you may get some shards of plastic that break off. You'll likely have to scrape the silicone off the glass with a razor blade --> particles. You may want to sand down some edges depending on the tank build quality --> particles. You may be able to get away with it but something is going to fall into the water!
Hmm. I think I will try. Maybe I can put a floating thing (cloth/mesh) on top of the water surface to collect particles.

Derimming a tank while its full is a horrible idea. Chances are, you will end up with a cracked tank, 5 gallons of water on the floor, and no where to put your fish

Agreed. Even with an empty tank, a good selection of tools and someone to help who'd done it before--both of the tanks we tried to de-rim ended up cracked. No huge loss as both were banged up freebies with already badly damaged plastic rims, but it would have been rough if I'd had anything needing to go back into them.
The first plant looks like Lysmachia nummularia. This one is more often an emersed plant, growing as a ground cover in damp areas and at the edges of a pond. A few stems may trail into the water, and it will survive for a while under water, but not tied to a rock. Much better to root it in the substrate and allow it to grow up and out of the tank.
Ah thanks. I won't de-rim it yet. I'm considering building another tank so I will probably just try de-rimming once I get around to building a tank. If it works, I could put it in my dad's backyard or sell/donate it (it was free).

Ok as soon as I get home I will untie it and plant it. Thanks!
