De rimming a 40b

Yea I know bad news except... this is an older 40b with a plastic oak rim the glass is 3/8. Here's my issue each side of the rim is a separate piece no center brace and they certainly don't prevent any bowing in the glass they would just bow with it. I don't trust this tank. What's the difference with the brace on or off not really anything. Any suggestions?

Even with the rim the tank will bow. But I think the rim keeps the tank from bowing TOO MUCH. Without the rim, that extra half inch of bowing glass is all it takes for the glass to explode. Personally I wouldn't chance it. I think rimless tanks are specifically designed with thicker glass and stronger silicone
Only issue I would have is, old tank, old sealant. If I were to trust an older tank, I would want to reseal it. I've never been one personally that believes the plastic or wood trim they add does much if anything in the form of support. Always seen it as more cosmetic. But that's just me.

Yea I have built quite a few rimless tanks. My problem is that this tank I don't trust it with the rim on. 9mm is the safe zone for the size and I'm barely above that at 3/8th but still. I think the rim is more for the integrity of the corners. I'm just thinking what's the point. Also wanted to point out the newer 40b are all 1/4" with a single piece of plastic rim.

for example of what I mean this hardly keeps anything intact.

I've been working on this build for a few weeks so now I'm just thinking maybe I should just buy a new one.

Paint it black de-rimm it or buy a new one.

Just a heads up I used a few box cutter blades and plastic putty knife to work a plastic top off a tank.. Using a Dremel to cut into the plastic trim across the top would be ideal. I didn't and had to do a lot of prying and damaged the glass edges.

Regardless wait for a dollar a gallon sale if your not confident in the tank.. 40g of water on your floor can sure cause a lot of damage.
