+1 on North Dallas Aquarium. I was at The Fish Gallery on Greenville Avenue (mid Dallas) today and the FW fish/plant selection was small and uninteresting (has been for many months - though their Saltwater selection seems to be better. Honestly, for as big as Dallas is I have yet to be impressed by many of the stores here but Dallas North comes close. Also note this is just my opinion :) I hope she has a fun trip!

I was just at the fish gallery the other day and the plant selection wasn't horrible. It wasn't great either, it was just the basic, run-of-the-mill plants you see everywhere else. However, the prices did seem a bit cheaper, especially compared to Dallas North Aquarium. Cherry Shrimp at DNA were $6 bucks whereas they were $3 ea at Fish gallery and even cheaper if you bought a lot of them. The tetra selection isn't very great at Fish Gallery, but it seems to have a lot of saltwater and cichlids.

If you are looking for rummy-nose tetras every, hit up Exotic Aquatics in Plano. They're the only place so far that I've seen that has a ton of them in shop, and the price isn't horrible I think. The selection there isn't amazing by any means, but for a small shop it is pretty good and the quality of the fish is great. They are really well cared for.

Another place worth checking out is ABC Tropical on Greenville up in the Richardson area. It isn't that great for general tanks and the like, but if you are looking for something unusual they have a lot of interesting fish. They got a few arrowanas and some of the bigger types of catfish. They also have a good selection of South American cichlids, especially some different types of flowerheads. However, if you are looking for discus this is DEFINITELY the place to go. The discus selection is unbelievable, and I don't think I'd be stretching it if I said this is more than likely one of the premier discus breeders in the country. He has amazing discus, ranging from huge to small. He has a whole back section of the shop that is private that is devoted to breeding discus. So basically if you are looking for discus hit up ABC Tropical. The selection is just unbelievable.

My favorites in the Dallas area are:
Fish Galleries (Dallas)
North Dallas Aquarium (Carrollton)
Aquatic Design Aquariums (Plano)
Plano Pets (Plano)
Exotic Aquatics (Plano)

Also, there is a handful of Saltwater only fish store around in case anyone is curious about that.

Used to be a great place in Richardson by the name of Boutique Pet Shop off of Garland Road. I went by there about a year ago and was disappointed to discover that they had closed the doors. I have been to a few LFSs, but this one was pretty special.

Oddly enough, regarding Boutique, I decided to do a Google search on them purely out of sadness and denial that they were gone, and I found this:

http://www.theaquariumboutique.com/Welcome.html

It's at the same address as where Boutique used to be. It has a pretty modern design and almost nothing on it so far, save for a name of the person running the place and a request to add him personally on Facebook. Looking him up on Facebook, his page is pretty current, and he just added the same image as that on the front of his webpage a few days ago.

It looks to me like someone bought up the space where Boutique used to be, reused the name for the sake of familiarity, and has set the place up to be entirely about fish instead of a general pet supply store with a large aquarium section. Can anyone verify this? Has anyone gone to check it out? I may go do so myself sometime soon if I can convince the partner to drive me across White Rock Lake to do so.

I went by the boutique a week ago. The freshwater selection is your run-of-the-mill petland freshwater...nothing special. The saltwater is much more in-depth. Fish gallery always has some of the harder to find freshy fish and has a few dwarf shrimp. The plant selection is ferns primarily and some stem plants, nothing in the way of mosses or exotics. The one on garland road has a ton of tanks but it looks like hea juat getting up and running and doesnt have anything special. (plus its run by one guy so i can expect that large number of tanks has to be hard for him to keep up)

Regarding Pet Boutique off Garland Rd, that place is actually in
Dallas. Not Richardson. Secondly they reopened the doors as a fish only shop. They now only occupy half the space they use to. How do I know, I dropped in one day and the same older white haired man still works there. The store is still in the family. Great place it was but its way too small to my liking now. I trusted all the fish that came from that store. Never had a problem without quarantining any fish.

I've never been to Pet Boutique. I'll have to stop by in a couple weeks when I'm in Dallas. (Might as well stop by the White Rock while I am there haha)

+1 on The fish gallery, sadly customer service in most of the fish places here aren't up to par but they had a nice selection of everything. First time I've ever seen butterfly koi at a lfs.
