Can you grow Crypt species in an inert sand substrate? Will water ferts be sufficient for their needs? And can you use root tabs in sand?

Most crypt species are pretty easy to grow IME. I've succeeded with inert sand and root tabs before, but since they're are predominantly root feeders ferts added to the water column don't do much for them

I have a whole forest of crypts growing in black diamond and have never used root tabs. They have been the easiest plants for me to grow.
