Sadly, its not the first place I have heard it. Mustafa has a reference to it at his website, and many marine aquarist call the coral banded shrimp a candy cane shrimp There are also a couple other forums that users refer to the CRS as a Candy Cane Shrimp.
Nice one wood. But the first name Crystal Red Shrimp arised before the creation of the higher grades. Or so I believe. Low grades came first right? And the lower grades don't look like a candy cane at all.
I'd also like to say that Crystal Red Shrimp sounds a lot more expensive and impressive than Candy Cane ;)

Another issue is where they came from. I'm guessing the Asian breeders that came up with these guys like the more elegant name.

yeah candy cane sounds like a stripper!!!
My daughter and I have called them "Candy Cane Shrimp" for about 5yrs (give or take) until we found out they were called CRS a yr ago...we still refer to them as Candy Cane Shrimp. LOL!
Darn...... I like the Dr Suess Shrimp.... I like it with green eggs and ham.....I do like them Sam I am!
I'm still trying to figure out where the "crystal" comes from. I'd think it would have to look like glass to get that name. The white areas don't remind me of crystal at all, unless you think of salt crystals, which are actually opaque...

Crystal meaning the price of them.....the better the quality the more they cost...just a hunch.

I think its because coloration. The color and beauty of a crystal is so prominant(spl), thus the color of the shrimp are the same. Simply at higher grades the color is more bold.

But then there can be many reasons for the name.
