Creating a shrimp strain?!

1308 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  DeepXero
While reading through the forum I have gone from: a person with an aquarium, to an all around algae grower, to a shrimper.... And this is where I shall stay. Being able to create a strain with my own hands, and out of my own mind is amazing. Just one flaw... Not sure how to.

For example: if I wanted to make a black tiger with red stripes, or even an orange tiger what would be the steps. I know full well it will take some years to get color right then cross, then cull and so on.

Any advice from those with experience is very appreciated. And those interested in starting their own are more that welcome to say what has and hasn't worked for them. I hope to increase the popularity of our hobby to where we other countries come to us as we do them.

First off welcome. Ha, ha you got bit by the shrimp bug too! I highly recommend Breeders nKeepers shrimp magazine by Chris Lukhaup both first and second volumes. Second the people in the forum are amazing:proud:. I can't say it enough. You are looking at a very long process. I just have started dipping my toes in the shrimp pond and I know people here that have been developing their own strains for quite a while now. Take a look at Soothing and his Sapphires. Now you are talking about multiple genes being in play with black tigers with red stripes. Here is where I let those with more experience speak. Good Luck!
Find an interesting shrimp (I recommend neos).
Try and understand what makes it unique (i.e. blue flesh, red markings, red flesh, ect.)
Try finding other shrimp with the same trends, or use other shrimp from the same clutch or parents
+years of breeding, culling, experimenting
+ ????
= success
Year and half ago I set my mind to get a line of CRS I like.... still not much progress today...will check back in another year or two.
I think study genetic is a good start and know what your "strain" will have in unique and start breedding, Inbreeding and cross breeding some individuals with the details you wanna fix and pray to random god to work :)

Someday I will start to "develop" some strain of something too :)
Lmao thanks everyone every comment fuels my fire to bring you guys a strain that's amazing regardless of time

My girlfriend is on board to help, so that means I get to drop loads of cash into my hobby! YES!!!!!!! Lol
Yeah. Having a significant other that supports makes a difference. My wife use to scoff at my aquatic hobbies. Now she just smiles and shakes her head. I remind her my hobby is about the same price as her make up. LOL!!!
Learning to track genes through multiple generations is a something that will help more than anything. If you can take even some of the guess work out of breeding, you can be more successful than most.

Seek out Yoyo. She is a female and has done some amazing things with the tiger shrimp strain. She has made her very own Tibee collection which is amazing. She even has you tiger with red stripes, but not blk body or blue. Hehehe

Another person to seek out speedie amazing shrimp +++++ quality and very very knowledgable.

+1 on soothing another Great shrimp breeder and keeper. Amazing shrimp culling on the sapphires
Thanks for the kudos folks. :) We've talked some via pm. The most important thing is just tenacity. The strains I've failed at far outnumber the strains that have succeeded. However as long as you persist, you will find some nice ones that work for you.
The one was just an example but I don't wanna just stop at 1 strain
