The definition of "crafty items" can be pretty broad depending on who thinks it is art and who thinks it junk but I've seen some pretty unusual items used. things like the guys who cut down bikes and used some of the parts in the tank or the person who cut a surfboard down to fit?
About as close to crafty as I get is wood and rock.
I tried making a styrofoam back wall one time but it looked like somebody tried to imitate nature so I quit.

lets keep it on the insane level
That's where we may all have different ideas of what is insane and not? Some of the things that I have used might fit into either list!

I use lots of wood and rocks. At times that has to include things like screws, slate floor tile and plastic ties. For planting, I use most any kind of plastic container from milk jugs to soda bottles. I've never liked using clay pots as they fall into the junk category for me but they are quite common in tanks.
Styrofoam and expanding foam are often used as a base for various cement coverings. Eggcrate ( light diffuser panels) are often used for many purposes. PVC pipe to build hills and hiding places. Soda straws to waterproof temperature probes. Spray paint to help hide filter plumbing. Wedding veil to hold plants and make dividers. Monofiliment fishing line and super glue for attaching plants. My daughter's taste runs quite different than mine and she uses lots of ceramics like pirate chests and castles.

My list is only limited by what needs I find and what solutions I find for those needs. At some point many of us do have a limit due to personal taste.
