I have had this happen, it was a precursor to the exact fish getting a body fungus. I think it might be the water though on where he came from. Sometimes if they are old school on a central filtration (like a LFS I used to go to) if one tank smells, it spread to all the tanks. Especially if they are connected to goldfish, they stink! Sorry goldfish keepers!
