Hi guys,

A quick advice from the experienced folks!

I am starting an aquascape with my 40gal breeder.

I have decided to get a Marineland 220 canister filter.

What is your opinion on my choice? will it be under filtered / any other preferred filters for this size of tank?

Eheim classic 2217. I had one on my 40b for 2 years now and it's worked great.

Marineland recommends the 220 for tanks up to 55 gallons. I tend to cut the estimates in half because the manufacturers estimations of filtration requirements are optimistic at best. I'd get either a bigger filter for that tank or a second filter. The Eheim 2217 is a fine choice as is a SunSun HW-304B but there are many other excellent choices out there as well depending on what is available where you are.
