I have a Coralife Aqualite fixture with 4 65w 6700K compact fluorescent bulbs that's acting oddly. When I turn on the two rear bulbs I get great light, but the cooling fans don't run. If I turn on the front two lights both cooling fans run, but the lights are noticably dimmer. I replaced all the bulbs about two months ago. I don't know anything about how this fixture is wired. Since it is several years old, I have considered replacing it rather than attempt repairs I am not qualified to do. If it is a simple fix I will gladly repair it. Do any of you know what would cause this problem?

I'd like some recommendations from those in the know. First, is this a repair that a guy who normally does all his own home repairs can do? Secondly, if I have to replace it what would you recommend? The T5 systems seem to be pretty economical and efficient.

Here are my specs:

55 Gal. planted community tank

6 Alternanthera reineckii, roseafolia
Dwarf hairgrass
Dwarf baby tears
small forest of sagittaria subulata
dozen or so narrow leaf chain swords
couple dozen Micro sword

Pressurized CO2 system

I used to have one on my 75. They only come with 1 fan.... So, that is normal. About being dim, it could be a the ballast. it could also be the connecting wires from the ballast to the bulbs. Either way, they are both cheap and easy to fix. You could check this site out.

While your at it, you could also install a second fan. I never did but I know some folks here have.

Mine actually has two fans, had to replace one a while back and got it from the link you provided, still have a spare as they come two in a pack. I just played with it some more and now the right bulb will glow pink for a bit and then very dimly light, kinda wavy looking too. I've already had one bulb failure since I replaced them two months ago. One bulb failed with four weeks. Emailed the manufacturer about their warranty but never got a response. The store did replace it for me but that required an 80 mile round trip as no one local stocks 21" straight pin compact fluorescents. Seems like all they have are T5 HO bulbs.
