Cool shrimp for 8 gallon planted & fish tank?

4141 Views 17 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Kubla
I have a 8 gallon planted tank with a Beta and I'm going to add 3-6 celestial pearl danios.

I'd like to add some cool, small shrimp. Which ones are cool and fun to watch that would be good for my tank.

My Beta is really peaceful and never hastled my ghost shrimp in the past. The ghost shrimp would literally take food flakes out of his mouth and the Beta would not react.

Thanks, Doug

it really depends on what you think a cool shrimp is

opinions on shrimp are like opinions on music! I think they're all pretty cool, from the very expensive down to painted fire reds.
What are my options for shrimp $10 or less per shrimp?

How many should I get with this set up?

I suppose cool means colorful to me.
I would go for some neos at this point.

Fire Red
Red Rili
Blue Rili
Yellow
Orange

They are all hardy, with yellows being the most fragile out of them. Still they're pretty hardy.
Wow....cool colors. Can you get one of each color or can you only do 1 or 2 types of a tank this size?

How many could I put in my 8 gallon planted with a Beta and 3-6 one-inch danios?

I wouldn't get one of each neo, Due to interbreeding if they do manage to breed they will become there Wild formation (brown).

Yeah you don't want to be mixing Neocaridinas because they can interbreed and when you mix them you won't get a paint mix principle but a genetic one where you get a wild coloration of brown.

What you can do is mix up the species a little bit and perhaps.....buy other shrimp

Other easy to care for ones are
Tiger-Caridina
Babaulti (green color)- Caridina

If you add those 2, none of them would interbreed. Babaulti don't interbreed with Tigers for some odd reason.

Anyways the amount you can add I would say would be like 10-20. However that'll depend on your filtration and how much plants you have. If you don't have coverage the shrimp will easily become food and the babies will surely be food without proper hiding spaces.

I would also add a sponge covering prefilter or a stainless steel one over the intake of you filter to prevent babies from being sucked in.

How much do want to spend for an expensive treat per shrimp for your betta? I fed, I mean added to my betta tank about $12 in orange sunkist that he gladly ate for me. Betta's seem to think shrimp are tasty for some reason. lol.
So do Babaulti (green color)- Caridina and Crystal shrimp Interbreed? ^ agree with betta's and snacks.

no I don't think they will crossbreed.
Larger Amano Shrimp could be a great option in a tank with CPDs and an aggressive species like the Betta.

Rachel (msjinkzd), a forum sponsor, has "jumbo" Amano shrimp that get easily 2"-2.5" in size and can be quite colorful, attractive and active.
If I don't have a breeding tank and I don't plan to breed the shrimp, can I mix various colors of Neos OR will they fight, not get along, etc.?

If shrimp try to breed and I don't have a separate breeding tank, won't they die or be eaten by the fish anyway?

Dwarf shrimp are peaceful, they'll get a long with anything even of their own kind. Bettas may even eat adult dwarf shrimp. Just a warning

No matter how peaful your betta is shrimp are tasty. I keep shrimp but I also like to eat them.
oh I think you are the one I was desperately looking for.
I have a round beautiful large Glass Bubble Fish Aquarium Bowls H-14", Open Diameter - 8.5" (Lot of 1 pc) , and I try to find out what the best filtration would be and also how I can get led lighting for aquarium plants in this round bowl plus a small efficient filter for my round aquarium. I so appreciate any help I can get from all off you. Thanks so much for your help. Jasi

Welcome to the forum. You can receive a lot of help here but you need to start your own thread. This is a thread on shrimp in the Shrimp and other Invertabrates section. Go to the Nano Planted Tanks section in the General Planted Forums and start a post there.
