i have been doing my research and hope to be starting my planted tank soon, but i keep seeing co2 popping up. what is it? i know it's for plants but what exactly does it do? how do you find it?

You need CO2 if you want to keep your plants alive. Though there are some low tech set up that doesnt need Co2, I wont go deeper than that. There are lots of info in this forum that will help you.

From mixing yeast and sugar, or a pressurized tank that slowly releases it into the water column. DIY co2 is an easy start and it's extremely hard to overdose with sugar and yeast. Start with that and you ll understand it rather quickly
