Co2 Tank 10lbs and 20lbs

4662 Views 35 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  Salem
I'm getting ready to assemble a 29 gal planted and wish to put a co2 system in it. My question is how long will a 10lbs tank last? If not how about 20lbs will last?
Thanks,

Should last a while im actualy hopeing to get a 20lb tank soon for my 75gal curently i have a 20oz paintball tank
I have a 10lb on a 37 gallon and it should last me around a year. I had both size tanks and i think 20 lb isn't necessary unless its a 75 gallon tank or bigger.
Should last you a while doesn't tell you much but I can tell you that my 5# on a 30 gallon lasted me 8 months at avg. 4 bps for 10 hrs a day. I have yet to see how long my second tank lasts at a lower bps.

E
can you fit a 20 under your tank? My 10 lasts about 4 to 6 months on 6bps.

Its going to vary, but if you think a 20 is going to fit, factor in the regulator and you may be in for a surprise
Awesome, thanks guys. I think I will be going for the 10# then. :proud:
If you can actually fit a 20# tank, get it. You will save money long term on refills. I don't know a lot of people that can fit 20# tanks under their stands though, particularly in smaller tanks.
In my experience, if you'll be getting refills, a 20# tank will last longer than two 10# tanks. The fire extinguisher place in my area just can't fill a tank as full as AirGas can.

If you'll be swapping tanks either will be as full as it can be.

This is great advice. I recently bought a 20# tank for my CO2 set up and had to return it because it didn't fit with the regulator attached. D'oh!!
I just purchased a 10 lb aluminum tank off ebay for $65.00. I had it filled at a fire extinguisher place (not many places to fill, but exchanges are everywhere). I did not want to exchange my new tank already so luckily I found the fire extinguisher place. I was told because I am running my co2 on a 95 gallon tank and a 30 gallon tank that it should last about 4 months. Time will tell.
I actually have room for the 20# I think. I breed a lot of South American And African Cichlids and this tank will be holding my Koi Angels. The place I have the tank has about 28" of height so I think a 20# should fit there with no problem. If not there is 100gal tank next to it that has plenty of room for that tank.
I'd definitely go for the 20. I've had 5, 10, and 20 pound tanks, and while the 5 and 10 were easy to swap out for full ones, the 10 couldn't be swapped anywhere local and would have had to be filled. I traded it to someone for the 20 lb tank without ever getting it filled--I don't mind if my tank isn't quite as pretty and shiny when I swap it, since it's under the stand and out of sight anyhow.

Sorry but this makes absolutely no sense.

It actually makes perfect sense. Places like airgas tend to rapidly add gas, then dump it and fill again. This chills the tank and allows it to fill to capacity.

A fire extinguisher shop might not care as much and if they are doing refills and not swaps, they are in more of a hurry. If they don't do this, it will easily have less gas than the properly filled tank. When I have seen refills done, they never cool the tank, but when I see them processing fills on their tanks, I do see them do this.

I think it is more about sloppy work or poor training, but none the less it is the case.
This may sound like a dumb question for those of you who have CO2 setups, but how much would a 20# tank actually weigh? I was considering starting CO2 soon and was trying to figure out the filed weight of these things. That might also be a factor in choosing tank sizes.

60ish lbs, Obviously depending on tank. Obviously depends on steel or aluminium. Steel is much cheaper but will weigh more.
In any case, large tank or small, its smarter to have two of them as opposed to one. That way when you tank is empty, you're not praying that the gas place is open, its not a holiday, weekend, or too late in the day. My tank usually empties when I stop checking it. FWIW a 20# tank is 28" tall w/o the regualtor. Your reg can be cocked to the side to fit but you wont be able to read it unless you pull out the whole tank. And just to guess a 20#er is about 50#s when full, total weight(steel).
Well you Dont have to wait till the tank is empty. All you do is know that you will need a refill soon and pick the best day to do it. Once the pressure drops below 500 then I start planning to get it refilled. You can stretch it 3 more weeks till its empty but why??? You should never have an empty tank

If you have the $$ to waste 3 weeks worth of Co2 everytime why wouldnt you just buy a backup tank?
Once the pressure starts dropping it is gone already. Why Risk either a end of tank dump , if u have a crappy regulator, or the innability to fill a tank when you can just fill it before it happens.

I can see a spare 2.5lb tank but not another 10 or 20 that seems like a waste to me.
