Co2 question

469 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  ScottCooper
I came home today for the first time this week and see a huge what looks to be a bubble nest in the back corner of my tank. I think it is Co2 but I am unsure. This has never happened before as I have been doing DIY Co2 for a few months. However, this is the first month where I took my HOB and have a nano diffuser. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
I have 2 gouramis in the tank but they are both male, I don't even know if gouramis make bubble nests like bettas and stuff.
Anyone have any ideas of what this "bubble nest" is?

well it could be a bubble nest as gouramis are bubble nesters, or it could be a protien build up. is there a film on the surface of the tank, are the bubbles near the outlet on you filter?
No there is no bubbles near my outlet of my filter. I have nothing skimming the surface at night but there is no film.
I didn't know gouramis were nesters but as I sit here watching my tank now I keep seeing him going over under it and doing something. When I get close though he comes out. he is also being extra territorial. He was pretty bad before but now he is really bad with the other gourami.
Can I just pull the bubbles out since I have 2 males in there and he obviously can't breed with anything?
yup you can take it out, it wont cause a problem, he is just happy! you might want to try and find a female and see what happens.

Bettas and gouramis along with others are all anabantoids - using a labyrinth structure in their gills - these two types are bubble nest builders - sure you have two males? One could be building regardless, but if the other is a female, you may end up with some eggs! You can remove the bubbles, but you may see them again - they'll rebuild. enjoy!
I'm pretty sure it's the gouramis. If they're like bettas, their bubblenests doesn't necessarily mean they will breed, just that they're healthy and raring to. ;) I leave the bubblenests alone. They eventually disappear or relocate after a while.

My tank is full and I don't have the time nor room for gourami fry. As it is now I am only home once a week to do my WC and prune and such. My mother and sister dose and feed for me during the week.

I agree, just leave the nest - it will dissapear - then you'll see another, and another - no harm. And if they do breed - the fry will likely be eaten, so you don't have to worry about the population (unlike endlers, etc.)
