Hey all!

I have a question...
Maybe a dumb question but…….. Here goes…. I hope it’s in the right thread. Does pumping co2 into the canister filter in some way, affect the bacteria in your filter? In a good way or bad way? Just a thought..... I don't know but I'm sure someone here does. Thank you all in advance!

All of us who use CO2, and have a canister filter would have a problem if this is a problem. As far as I can recall I have never seen any reports of such problems. So, that tells me there is no problem, or if there is, it is too small an effect to be concerned about.

Hi dempsec1, it's not a problem because biological filtration is being performed by the plants. In a well planted tank, bacteria are just not that important. In fact they require a lot of oxygen to change NH4 to NO2 to NO3, unlike plants which use CO2. So to answer the question it might effect the bacteria, but in a way that would be considerably better for the overall health of a planted tank. It's just not something we need to worry about.
