CO2 6,6 gallon monte carlo and dwarf hair grass

4388 Views 19 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Redneck tenner
I'm making an iwagumi with monte carlo and dwarf hair grass as carpet plant. Atm it's in dry start. The tank is 6,6 gallon / 25 litre with 5 watt LED. I bought liquid CO2. Will liquid co2 maintain a carpet or is a CO2 system really needed? If so any tips on what kind of CO2 system?

Thanks.

Co2 is recommended and will help plant growth tremendously, I even suggest it. But without Co2 your prone to some more melting (possibly) and not as much growth as fast.

plants like HC/monte carlo really benefit greatly from pressurized CO2. they will not grow as quickly or as healthy without it. they benefit much more from this than other types of plants IMO

DHG will also benefit from CO2 but not the extent monte carlo will I don't think. DHG really likes nutrients for its roots (soil-based substrate / dirt) and higher light to take off. CO2 will also help it grow faster.

I really don't think 'liquid CO2' products do all that much to be honest. now I just use excel solely to kill BBA algae when I need to...

Coming from a dry start I would assume the monte carlo will especially take a beating from sever lack of CO2 when you fill the tank up. DHG will probably be mostly fine. Like betta says you will probably see quite a bit more melting without it. that's the risk of dry start though...

Would you guys recommend filling the tank and skip the dry start? I think it would take ages to grow carpet with my low light. About the melting isn't that easy to fix with trimming it off for regrow?

What about the system in the picture is it okay?

I myself was thinking of that system @Nigel95 before going with a GLA co2 system for 300$ (will be worth it.) but when I did all the cost effects and math, that system you named costs more in the long run than the regular Co2 system. So I wouldn't go with that but if you want to that's fine. Melting is when emersed growth dies submerged, yes you can trim it back.
Yeah I rather choose for the cheaper tropica system to start with @BettaBettas . I have to turn the co2 off at night, does this means I have to count bubbles per minute every morning?

Thanks

make sure you turn it off like 1 hour or so before the lights go off. Count BPS
For example my lights are on during 14:00 - 22:00, I will put the CO2 on during 14:00 - 21:00. Beside the lights some sunlight will reach my tank earlier during the day; will this be a problem with no CO2 running? @BettaBettas
I wouldn't think so? may wanna ask someone who is more "qualified" lol
start it an hour before lights go on

if you are really running low light you are screwed anyways / i wouldn't even bother. you need medium light to grow carpet plants like dhg/monte carlo at a decent rate

Changing the light isn't a solution on a superfish home 25 :(. On YouTube I saw someone growing dhg with this tank. As advertised monte carlo can grow in shadow; I thought I would be fine. Don't have the money to buy a new tank and light atm. How much w/l do you consider as medium? @klibs
Guys what do you think about the following schedule for my CO2 system:
Week 1-3: 3bps
Week 4: 2bps
week 5: 1bps
week 6: 0,5 bps
week 7: 0,25 bps
week 8: 0,17 bps (1 bubble every 6 seconds) and from here watch the plants if higher CO2 is needed.

Thanks

Why would you be decreasing bubble rate (per second)? This would mean a decrease in CO2 concentration over time.

Because my tank is currently in dry start. The plants have unlimited CO2 now. Tropica says 0,17 bps with their nano system for medium plants like monte Carlo and dwarf hair grass. I don't wanna start with 0,17 bps to avoid melting/shock.

Decided to buy a drop checker other problem now is, I can only find liquid that meassures 20mg/l; while tropica recommends for monte carlo and dwarf hair grass 6-14 mg/l. Will 20 mg/l do any harm to the plants consider I have low light.

I see; converting from bubbles per second to mg/L is not very precise; this is because the actual concentration of CO2 will be largely dependent on how efficiently it is dissolved into your water column, in addition to your water volume.

As such, having a bubble rate of "0.17 bubbles per second" is essentially meaningless. What works for one aquarium may not be suitable for another.

If you are measuring CO2 using a drop checker, the difference between 6-14 ppm and 20 ppm of CO2 will be achievable; having an increase in CO2 will not harm the plants; they will simply use what they require. I would carefully monitor livestock for any signs of distress caused by CO2, however, even when CO2 concentration is increased to 30 ppm, it usually does not warrant any cause for concern.

About impossible to figure a bubble count without it on your system and running. Darkblade is dead on. Even when running you may have to fine tune it. I tried a non solenoid type regulator.....pita. Tanks are so small that as gas is used bps wont hold steady. I know its a small tank....but for a little more you can get an aquatek mini. Imagine how long a 24oz paintball would last on a 6.6g. My rough guess....maybe a year lol

yeah but worth it long term compared to the 500gram bottle :D

Is this system wat you meant by the aquatek mini?
No...doesnt look like what we have in usa. Maybe same name different company.
