I have a relatively new tank that has been set up and I keep changing the water every 2/3 days because it gets cloudy and stinky. I have regular gravel ( nothing special for plants, yet) and a few pieces of java fern. Should I add more plants to help get the cycle going? Why does the water keep getting so cloudy so fast?

A new tank and just started to cycle. Normal. Cloudy water should clear in a week or more...

Do you think adding more plants would help with the process or would that be to much? should I just let it cycle the way it is or would adding the plants help?

Im curious why your water is "stinky" with a new tank that would be low in organic compounds. This wouldn't be normal.


The cloudiness is just heterotrophic bacteria- normal to the process of cycling an aquarium.

Do you have a filter on the tank or anything for water movement? If it's stinky that sounds like it's going stagnant...
