Cleaning sponge pre-filters

This is probably a silly question but is there some trick to removing the sponge prefilters so that all the debris isn't released into the tank?
I try to remove them and squeeze out weekly with each water change but it seems like I make a big mess trying to remove them :/

I don't clean mine unless the water flow decreases

How is this even helpful? Did you even bother to read the question?

I used to use sandwich bags as well and switched over to little plastic jewelry bags a few months ago. They just barely fit over the sponges and pretty much catch everything. We got them from JC Penney's.
I'd use a brine shrimp net when pulling the tube out.
Thank you! I'll try a sandwich bag next time. That's a great idea.

If my filter intake gets a lot of stuff on it I use the sammich bag for that too.
