Cicada Memories

1403 Views 14 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Bahugo
I have some of the loudest cicadas outside of my house right now and it made me remember them when I was younger. I would collect there exoskeletons for some odd reason

I can't imagine myself touching something that gross looking. Did anybody else do this?:confused1:

the exoskeletons have freaked me out for as long as i can remember and probably always will, so no :'D
i think once dad picked one up and set it on a table of mine when i was a little kid, and i just flipped out completely xD
I'd walk around my block at night to see if I could find the cicadas in the middle of molting. It was cool how they emerged from their exoskeletons and that they were a pale green.
A few days ago there was a cicada chorale in my backyard. They must come out during the monsoon season when it's humid and warm.
I ate one of those once... Got $10 for doing it. Hahaha!

When Brood X emerged in 2004, my then one year old tried to eat one. :eek5: I love to gross her out now by telling her about it. :hihi:

I think a smaller brood may emerge here sometime in the next several years.

I remember collecting the exoskeletons when I was a kid. I thought they were the coolest things ever.
Funny that you raised this topic. i remember hearing it all summer long growing up. ever since i moved two years ago, i dont recall ever hearing them anymore.... that and seeing any bumble bees or blue jays.
I hear them somewhere but I can never find them.

My dog loves them so much! I could not get her to stop eating them! haha!
Never heard of them or seen them, lol. Gotta love living on the west coast your entire life. We have...I can't really think of invasive species.

I would eat a locust no problem. But not those....no. Just no.

lol that was a great summer. they were everywhere. ever since then they have been slowly dying off here. i really miss hearing them all summer long.

i used to grab every exoskeleton i could find and crush them up in my hand (when i was young) but now i haven't a skeleton in about 7 years. The Apt complex i live in now had one this year. it was the first one i have heard here since I moved in three years ago.

the bee population in general has been dropping all over the world. it is thought that bees and cell phones operate on the same frequnecies, and the continual increase in cell phones has wrecked havock on bee navigation. causing their decline. none of this proven and is all theory, but to me it makes sense.
I used to love finding them when I was a kid growing up in Indiana.

Last summer here in NE Florida the noise in the trees was deafening some nights. It has not been as bad this year but I'm seeing and hearing them here and there. I know the population runs in cycles.

You have got to be kidding me!!!:hihi:
