Christmas Break Tank Care

536 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Cboss
I'm a college student and have a 6.6 gallon tank with about 50 RCS (many more babies on the way) and 2 otos in my college apartment. I will be gone for 4 weeks, but plan on coming up halfway through break to top off the water, maybe do a quick water change, and make sure everything is running smoothly.

I've been planning on getting an automatic fish feeder to feed everything. Any recommendations? Since I'm in college, cheaper is always better.

What would be the best way to ensure my tank stays as happy and healthy as possible while I'm gone?

Has anyone else done this successfully and have any tips?

Feed lots two weeks before you leave. Don't feed the week before you leave. WC two days before you leave. Drop the lighting cycle to half of what it is. Don't feed while you're away.
Thanks

What is the reason for not feeding the week before I leave?
I think if its just shrimp in there they can feed on the bio-film and extras that in the tank. The otos will be fine eating what they eat. But your plan on checking on it half way though sounds great. I think everything will be fine going that long with out eating. Just make sure to do a good water change before you leave and it should be good.
Thanks

So they can poop and you can do the WC two days before you leave. :p
Ah... I see.
