Has anybody tried the cheaper LED strips and bars all comming in from China over planted aquariums? Some of the white, blue and blue white combined bars look like they may be of some use either in combination with or on their own for plant growth, does anybody have any experience with these? Im looking at some pretty nice looking and very cheap 20cm 8 LED bars for my nano which combine blue and white light. Its A bit blue for my liking but in combination with maybe an extra pure white bulb it may tone the colour down a bit. However are these actually producing a spectrum of light actually useful for the growth of plants?

Nope, they don't output enough light to grow plants. They are outfitted with low wattage (1/10W or such) LEDs that are okay to light up a shelf or underneath it, but not enough to allow plants to photosynthesize. Prices are coming down though, as more manufacturers venture out into LED land, pretty soon they will be comparable to our regular fluorescents and HQI fixtures. Not quite yet.
