Caught Fairy Shrimp in puddle!

3916 Views 25 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  HighDesert
I caught a half dozen beautiful little fairy shrimp in a puddle that was drying up. I originally went to collect some of the tadpoles that are in this puddle every year during monsoons, but in the tiny bits of water left around the slightly larger ones were fairy shrimp! They're really neat! I will try to get pics this week!

Awww. :D Congratulations! They sound cute with a name like that.
Awesome. I keep looking for a good vernal pool in my area, but I haven't found one yet. I know that there are a few that are absolutely swarming with fairy shrimp in February -April. Congrats, I hope you can keep them going (if that's your plan.)
certain species of desert shrimp are highly endangered. treat them well.
What are fairy shrimp?

If you put a molt under your pillow, they leave you a quarter. :hihi:
Fairy shrimp aka Bamboo/Wood shrimp are all Atyopsis species, I believe.

Small, daphnia-like (in size, but not structure) freshwater inverts which usually inhabit puddles or nvernal pools. They don't typically give live birth, but lay eggs which stay dry for years at a time until they are submerged in water for ~24-48 hours, at which point they hatch and the cycle begins again.

No, not at all

There's a good picture here: http://killipark.blogspot.com/2008/05/fairy-shrimp-and-fresh-water-artemia.html

They're quite a bit larger than daphnia. The smallish ones are perhaps 1/4" long, and the bigger species are an inch or more. The biggest species grows up to 3.5".
They're really wonderful! These are pretty much translucent with orange tails. I am setting up a small shrimp bowl for them this evening. They apparently only live for a season, so I will be using native dirt so they can lay their eggs. Once they've lived out their lives I'll put the bowl in the garage and allow the water to evaporate, then do the freezing/thawing cycles and introduce water into it again next Spring!
That's what I thought they were but then second guessed myself when I read that you actually WANT them. :p

I think they'd look neat in a Wabi Kusa display. Hmmm.... :hihi:
Subtle, Kiran, subtle. ;-) I wish I could afford some of your Wabi-Kusa! They're so pretty! Actually, though, I think you're right. They'd look more "authentic" in some ways than the flashy shrimp.
Haha, maybe we can work out a partial trade for some fairy shimp :bounce:
I Googled these shrimp and they're creepy looking lol

Yeah, I can't believe people want these things. Maybe as a special treat for fish, but nothing to keep as a pet.

Mmhmm, first thing I thought was "These are FAIRY shrimp? More like ugly, make my skin crawl shrimp"

lol

fairy shrimp won't even gets bigger than 1+ inch..lol
Cool I love fairy shrimp, used to keep a journal here but then got tired of it :/ they're not very sustainable, hate the whole drying out freezing eggs cycle.
