Catalina Aquariums. Reflector quality?

2507 Views 16 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Trickerie
Trying to determine what type of light a single t5 HO or 65w PC from catalina would give @12-14". What quality are their reflectors? From the pictures, they look pretty large and highly polished. Can anyone chime in that has experience with them?

Planning a high light 20Long to get a low carpet and am researching my lighting options.

Thanks as always :]

Their lights are amazing. All of my tanks use only catalina lights. I have 2 custom built fixture I use specifically for my planted tanks. They have the extra wide reflectors and are very effective.

Thanks, but I'm still torn. For example, the 30" lighthouse PC looks interesting, but will it give me enough light to sustain a low carpet? I know the t5HO would, but I suspect it would be too much light. My big problem is Im limited vertically. I have only about 4-5" to work with above the tank.
From what I can see, Catalina reflector quality varies between the one bulb units, and the best multiple bulb units. Why not look at the chart of PAR vs distance in http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/showthread.php?t=184368 which includes a few Catalina lights.
im not tryin to dis catalina but i bought a retro fit kit from reefgeeks and my dad had a catalina fixture and he ended up switching to the same retrofit i bought because he said the reflectors werent as good as the ones from that particular brand that i had bought
here is the same kit i bought

If t5ho is to much for you, and you dont want to do PC...You can call them directly and ask them to do a t5NO setup. All they really have to do is reconfigure the ballast. But they dont carry the t5no bulbs.

They are local to me, and im doing a 36'' t5no for my 40b.

I did have their 3 t5ho setup and the reflectors were of very nice quality. Top notch small company.
Their ballasts supposedly can be used with NO or HO bulbs.

Really, humm that makes sense. But when I asked to do the t5no ballasts, they said its fine but they did not carry the bulbs for the NO. So thats why I assumed you needed different bulbs.

Maybe Ill call in a few days and ask them again.

But if you think about it, if the ballast is setup as a t5ho, you HAVE to use t5ho bulbs right?

Last I heard they are using electronic ballasts that will adjust between HO and NO.

Well I have alot of respect for Catalina. I call up the manufacture and describe the light I have in mind (dual ballast, wide reflectors, hanging brackets, stainless body, ect). The point is with Catalina they hand make your lights to your specifications. I work at a local LFS and grow plants with Catalina lighs:

Think of the ideal light...and then email them the specs. Catalina will build that light, and it wont disappoint.

I think a 1 bulb Catalina will be just enough light for what I'm looking for, according to the new par vs distance hoppy posted above
Notice that the 1 bulb Catalina line on that chart is calculated, not based on actual measurement. I suspect you will get less PAR than that since the pictures of that light show it being a pretty primitive reflector compared to their multiple bulb lights.

I did notice that as well. Will it still outpower a fishneedit 2 bulb? That was the other option I was looking at, though I think it may be a little under powered.
Call them! If you want a higher quality reflector ask for it. Their lights can be 100% customized
I contacted them and they assured me the single bulb reflector and the multi bulb reflectors are of the same quality. This is good news, because I think the single bulb 30" will be perfect for what I want!

The material used for the reflectors is very likely to be the same, but their photos of their lights don't show them to have the same shape, and the shape is much more important than the material. Of course, what you see in a photo is never as definitive as what you see first hand, so they may be correct.
True. I guess I will find out! Ill measure it with the DIY meter I got from you and will let you know.
