Cat + filter hose = FLOOD-HELP.

I have a fluval 305 and a brand new kitten who loves to chew on everything including my return tube into the tank. Woke up the next day with a puncture hole in the tube and about 15 gals of water on the rug. Could have been 55 gals got lucky sort of. Question is how to protect the hoses, my tank is on a table so all equipment is exposed can't hide anything. And no getting rid of the cat is not an option. Thank you.

You're a nice person.

Have you considered getting a stand with a cabinet? You could always build a small cabinet just to house equipment.

Kitteh Muzzle.

:d
Make the hoses inaccessible. Sheath them with something hard to chew through. Spray them with pepper spray or rub them with jalapeños. Give the kitty something more fun to chew on.

Just some ideas...

Lol. :proud:
I'm sorry if this sounds mean, but that's hilarious! I've seen cats chew as bad as dogs. Their mouths are just smaller so damage is smaller. My in-laws kitten chewed up the ear pieces of a pair of glasses. Had to buy a new pair.
Hey Biscuitslayer thank you only a nice person would say that, I thought about building a cabinet but did not feel like tearing down the tank, and a cabinet for the equipment would still leave the hoses out in the open. Like the idea of covering the hoses just have to figure out how. Hey Fishscale muzzle for a sweet little kittie huh think I have one in your size, Lol.
What I have done in the past is wrap the lines with velcro. Its a little more expensive but cats don't like the feel of it. I have had several cats and have gone through the same thing.

if you're going to spray the hoses with something, I suggest not to... pepper spray or jalapeños will work but only for a while.... I strongly suggest to grab and orange, any kind will do, peal it and stick the peal to your cats nose. Most if not all cat's do NOT like the smell of citrus. Grab lemons, oranges, grapefruits and rub the peals on the hoses, after about 3-4 days of nasty hose smells, they most likely won't be after it again, did it with my gf's cat :)
akin to the last post, you might try to pick up some of the spiral plastic tree guards (for small fruit trees). It would be easy to wrap the pipes.

I was thinking more along the lines of cable wraps that are used to neaten up bundles of cables. It's the exact same idea, but narrower diameter. It's also fairly thin, and maybe the kitteh would just chew through it anyway.
Sprinkle Cayenne pepper around the base of the stand. Might not be the nicest way to do it, but it's stopped many a cat from climbing our Christmas trees.
Use piping insulation.
That brown foamy stuff is not pleasant.
Outline it with PVC pipe

My thoughts the same.

Actually, that is a pretty good idea.

My family had a black lab that used to wag her tail so hard that she would hit it and cause a trauma wound. Needless to say, it is impossible to keep a dog from wagging its tail.

My father actually wrapped a piece of pipe insulation around her tail and then taped duct tape around it to keep it on. It was funny looking, but it did the trick. It was the only way that we could keep her tail from bleeding everywhere.

If it is flexible enough for a dog's tail, I would think it would work on some filter hoses.

OMG. So funny, so sad.
We have a kitty that likes to chew electrical cords. She knocked out power on various electronics (including our laptop - ugh) and appliances - and no, they don't get fried like the white cat in Christmas Vacation - she lived through every one, and never seemed to receive any electrical deterrent.

There is a product called apple bitters that works well. It is sold in a small spray bottle and is commonly stocked at most pet stores.
If you use the bitter apple spray - the key thing to using bitter apple is you have to give the dog/cat a spray in the mouth so they get a good taste and then spray the hoses or furniture etc. Works well other then leaving a bad taste in their mouths.
Good luck
One more idea to add to the mix.... wrap in aluminum foil. Cats hate to touch aluminum foil!
