Carbon media and ferts.

I recently bought a Fluval 205 external filter, which was easy to setup, and runs really well, so i'm very pleased with it. My question is this, i used the media that came with it, the biomax and the carbon pouches, but i was wondering if the carbon would soak up the liquid ferts that i use, in the same way that it can absorb any medication. I am planning to relace the carbon pouches with a different media very soon, but in the meantime i wondered about the carbon, whether i should have relaced it straight away?

Carbon is only effective for a short time like a week or so and after that its a good media ,just leave it there and you won't be sorry.
Yes, but would it absorb ferts in that first week or more?:icon_conf
carbon usually works for around 4-8 weeks; depending on the quality, amount of matter being absorbed and the speed of the water flowing thru. you should take it out.
Yep, just as i thought, opinion is divided. Think i'll replace it with some more BioMax, just for my own peace of mind. Unless anyone can come up with a good reason not to?
not opinion; i pulled the 4-8 weeks from Flash animation: Filtration animation

look at the Conventional Carbon Filter section. i figured no one would try to argue the time frame if i quoted/linked to a gov website :)
If you have a new setup or doing some changes to the tank, I think it's a good idea to keep the carbon in there. Won't get rid of the macros and there's still some debate about it removing all the traces. After it expires, it will just act as a good bio-media.

Maybe this thread will give some answers:

Activated carbon - Barr Report
Too bad that thread can't be a sticky:)
running AC only works if you do EI dosing; atleast in my experience. i prefer a less wasteful routine so it pretty much stopped me in my tracks while it was in my filters (months of trial).
