Canister Filter selection???

Hello friends. I am looking to purchase a new canister filter but not able to decide which one. I have 150 gallon freshwater community. Currently i have 4 HOB emperror 400's and also one JBJ reaction 4 stage 45u. But I am tired of those emperror's noise and also dont like to see 4 wide black intake tubes, I try to hide them with background but still .,...... So i want to replace those 4 HOB's with a large capacity canister.
I was looking into this Fluval FX5 and people seem to rave about it. Does anyone has long time experience with FX5 may be years? Do u recommend it?
I know eheim series are high quality but also cost more.
Any recommendations with pros and cons will help me decide.

Thanks for your advice in advance.

Get two sunsun's for the price of one of the high end canisters. If you have any doubts check out overstocked's review, it's detailed and has many followers that share there experiences.
I just looked at the picture of that sunsun. It exactly like my JBJ reaction ....but I dont know how much I question the quality... Will read reviews...

In the mean time if anyone has long time experience wth fluval fx5 please share
For my money, I'd get a couple of Eheim's, but they are very expensive compared to the others. The plus side is they have parts availability through many online sources, including Eheim.

This makes a big difference when you break some minor part, and have to toss the entire filter because you can get that one little piece you need to fix it.

have a fx5, but on a 75g. all biomax media. haven't lost a fish since the tanks been up with it. water always looks/smells good.

+1. Eheim:proud:
I have an FX5 been running for 3.5 years. Probably did at most 8 water changes throughout the entire time. Always kept water clear, tons of water current and flow even when pack with media. Waterchanges are a easy as heck because of how the FX5 is built. It's smart technology system and priming is awesome. Worth the every bit of the price paid. I paid $280 back in those years.

Hi Jaggedfury,
You had only 8 water changes in 3.5 years with your FX5? Thats very impressive and unusual.
Did you have any issue with the FX5 stopping every day for air escape? (I think there is a microchip built in for that). Any parts replacement or any other issue? Is it still going? How big is your tank?

Sounds like FX5 is very promising. How often do you change those white foam blocks?

Thanks for the feedback
If its anything like the Fluval 205 tubing, you can't connect an inline heater to it. I would go the eheim if you plan to get inline heaters.
the fluval 205 has 1/2 inch tubing the fx5 is 3/4 i think maybe 1 inch
the thing i dont like about the fx5 is since the flow is so high it has large intake strainer would suck in shrimp and i dont think i would like to cover it with foam because of restriction on high flow
the other thing i dont like is how much space the foam takes up
when you take the foam out of the picture theres not much capacity there
You can't go wrong with the SunSuns. Save your money.

Just replace the hose with regular clear tubing. I do this with my Fluvals when I hook accesories to them. The only part of the original tubing I keep is the u bend at the top because I like the way it fits on my tanks. you can always get adapters and hose barbs if you're having trouble with fit. I've hooked PVC reactors to Fluval 105, 205, and 405 filters.

BUt you could buy another SunSUn for the price of a EHeim impeller..... So at this point you could have bought 4 sunsuns...
One filter or another doesn't negate the need for water changes. Filters do not remove hormones, TDS, and the like that water changes do. If you choose a low water change option, it has little to do with which filter you run.
I'm not getting the connection between filter choice and water changes. How does any filter allow you to avoid water changes?

I love my SunSuns.
