Yea it works fine. Just treat your water with something like prime or whatever to take out the chlorine / chloramines.

No need to treat with prime as there should be no fish in during the cycling.

If you were changing 100% of the water I may have some concern but not with the 50% water changes. Not saying you can't and it definitely won't hurt anything (other than the pocket book) but its not necessary.
