Hey guys,

I've decided to jump into the salt section of the hobby and go brackish. I have tons of media that I've used to help jump start other freshwater cycles before, but not sure if it would work for brackish. The fish I want requires a low gravity (1.005-1.008), so the salinity isn't that high.

I understand using seeded media won't cycle it immediately, but it certainly does give it a boost.

Would i be able to use my seeded freshwater media to jumpstart a low gravity brackish aquarium? Any input ?

I mean it's just a tad bit of salt. It's only 1.006-1.008 compared to that of an actual marine tank.

I see no reason why that wouldnt work. but I've got 0 experience with salt or brackish water. But there is a specific bacteria that converts ammonia to nitrite and then another specific bacteria that converts nitrite to nitrate. Shouldnt matter if that is in fresh, brackish or salt water (or even out of water for that matter).

Going full salt mike take some adaptation but brackish at less than 1.001 is not going to be an issue. A lot of people put a little salt in their freshwater tanks.

I'm uncertain. I use microbacter whenever I add fish or cycle a tank. I fully cycled my 75 gallon in a matter of days with it. Although I gave it another 2 weeks just in case.

You can set up the tank ahead of time, before you get the fish and do the fishless cycle. Go ahead and add whatever spare media you have to see if that will jump start the cycle.
If the bacteria from the fresh water do not handle that level of salt, you will still be doing the fishless cycle to grow the right bacteria. That might take as long as 3 weeks. If the fresh water bacteria are OK with that level of salt then the fishless cycle will go really fast, and the tank could be ready for fish in just a few days.

My wife has added salt to freshwater tanks but can't say what the SG was afterwards. I don't remember any issues.

I use Seachem Stability for cycling and water changes. I have salt and freshwater tanks and this stuff works for both. You can use the media you have but do as Diana suggested and run a fishless cycle with the new salinity levels you desire so your bacteria has a chance to get used to it. Brackish fish are fun, what were you planning on keeping? I used to have a pair of Orange Chromides and a Knight Goby a while ago.

A figure 8 puffer would be amazing but I love puffers lol I have a red eye puffer and would like to get a bigger one
