o.k I have this really kool wood piece for my tank..
But it is COVERED with BBA.. i mean you cannot even see the Wood..

I have tried everything to get the BBA off the wood..

Steal wood to scrub the bba, Pressure washer and what not else but nothing works..

So I was think of socking the wood in a strong solution of bleach.

Will the bleach dissolve the BBA and leave the wood clean.

Any thoughts Thax

You could go extreme and get a snad blaster
Wouldnt the bleach soak into the wood?
You don't need a strong solution. Say 1:20 bleach water ratio, will kill it. Scrub off as much as possible if you can. It may not all come off, but it will be dead. A loach will clean up the dead bba for you in no time. MAKE SURE TO SOAK IN A SOLUTION OF DECHLORINATED WATER AFTERWARDS!!!
thax guys...

i have killed the BBA with a weak bleach solution.. but now the white strands of BBA remain.. and they look nasty..
that why i was wondering about something that would dissolve the BBA but not harm the wood...

the sand blasting would get rid of the BBA .. but will damage the wood as well :)

any other thoughts guys..

@ retoid -- Also bleach will soak into the wood.. But if you dry the wood.. the bleach will be gone.. :) Bleach is good if used properly...:icon_cool

You could try boiling water, it might loosen it up enough to break free from the wood. Other then that it would seem manually picking, scraping, or rubbing it off are your options. If you used sandpaper it may discolor the wood in places but it will darken back up soon enough. Cellulose is a tough substance and you are going to have a hard time finding anything to 'dissolve' it, bleach sure won't.

Thax but that sucks... :( i am sooo tired for scrubbing that ...

i wish there was another option...
As gmccreedy suggested a pleco, or loach probably would clean it. They are quite good at rasping algae off wood rocks etc. If you really like the piece of wood that may work.
IME a day or 2 after the BBA turns white it will just fall off with some minor help.
Before that, almost impossible, .
SUCCESSES>>>>
i socked the wood in a Strong bleach solution.
About 1 part bleach to 3 parts water..
all the BBA is goin.. just a little bit of slime..

BUt as a side effect the wood which was dark brown in color now is Quite Little in color..

Hopefully in a couple of months the wood will be dark brown again..

Thank guys..

well....you did just bleach the wood. thats why I suggested a weak solution...to avoid the drastic discoloration. You basically just killed a fly with a swatter the size of kansas.

Make sure to soak in dechlor water for a few days. (the bleach is the slime...you may want to deactivate it before it continues to soak and bleach the wood more).
got may pictures of it pre and post soak
i wish i had taken pics of the pre Soak wood..

You would have been amazed with the amount of BBA i had..
It was my fault.. i did neligate my tank for over 6 months..

if you want i could get a post soak pics..
